Dedičná štôlňa Glanzenberg

Medieval adit open to the public beneath the centre of Banská Štiavnica, where ceremonial mine inspections (fárania) by distinguished visitors were held.

About the museum

The opened part of the adit ends at the Kaufhaus shaft at a depth of 32 metres and is 500 metres long. Since 1751 the most significant visits to the town have been recorded in the Dedičná štôlňa Glanzenberg (Glanzenberg Hereditary Adit). At the end of the accessible section are the so-called Imperial Stairs (cisárske schody), which connect it with the lower-lying Horná Svätorojičná štôlňa (Upper Svätorojičná Adit). At a depth of 40 metres below the surface, the space was enlarged in 1751 for the visit of Emperor Francis I Stephen of Lorraine, husband of Maria Theresa; a commemorative plaque was placed in honour of the visit, and more were added later.

The adit lies at a shallow depth directly beneath the buildings of the town centre, which is why it was decided to reconstruct and restore it and revive the tradition of ceremonial visits by distinguished personalities. It was opened to the public in 2003.
