About the museum
Nový zámok (New Castle), also known as Nový hrad, Panenský hrad or Dievčenský hrad (Maiden Castle), stands on Frauenberg hill and dominates Banská Štiavnica. The anti-Turkish Renaissance fortress was built in 1564–1571. It also served as a watchtower (vartovka) and was part of the anti-Turkish military signalling system of the Jednota stredoslovenských banských miest (Union of Central Slovak Mining Towns), which stretched from Levice to Ľubietová.
After the Turkish wars ended, gunpowder for the mining of Banská Štiavnica was stored here, and later a fire watch, the so-called živé hodiny (living clock), was based here. Today the castle houses an exhibition on the military situation at the time of the Turkish wars, on the armament of fortresses, on weapons of the Hungarian and Turkish armies, and on painted shooting targets. It also includes an overview of the history of the Dobrovoľný hasičský zbor Banskej Štiavnice (Volunteer Fire Brigade of Banská Štiavnica), founded in 1873.
