About the museum
Kammerhof is one of the most valuable historic monuments in the historic centre of Banská Štiavnica and was built up gradually from the 12th century. In the 16th century it became the seat of the Main Chamber-Count Office (Hlavný komorskogrófsky úrad), which administered mining in the richest ore region, in today's central Slovak mining area.
Today the building is the main seat of the Slovenské banské múzeum. The exhibition Baníctvo na Slovensku (Mining in Slovakia) is the largest in the town and does not deal only with mining technology. It shows the whole process, from the discovery of a deposit and geological survey, through work tools, mining maps, lamps and means of transport, to draining the underground with pumping equipment and different types of power: horse, water, compressed air and electricity. The narrative spans from the oldest archaeological finds to the 20th century.
The museum recommends visiting this exhibition before touring the underground in the Glanzenberg adit or in the Banské múzeum v prírode (open-air mining museum). The building also houses the museum's information centre with a shop selling souvenirs, minerals and specialist publications.
