About the museum
The blast furnace, later called Maša or Frischfajer, was built in 1796 between Liptovský Hrádok and Kráľová Lehota. Iron ore was brought from the Liptov mines, and the smelting work was carried out by about 70 specialists from German-speaking lands. The iron supplied the forges in the surroundings, and from 1805 to 1813 a factory produced infantry rifles, cavalry carbines and pistols for the Austrian army. After arms production ended, cast gravestone crosses were made, and from the mid-19th century also wood wool and pipes. Production ended in 1873.
Of the complex, the Vážnica and the Klopačka, a bell tower announcing the change of shifts, have been preserved. Both buildings were reconstructed in 1964–1965, are national cultural monuments and are managed by the Liptovské múzeum. In the Vážnica there is an exhibition on the history of mining and metallurgy in Liptov, with a miner's costume, a collection of mining lamps and work tools; in the Klopačka there are reproductions of mining woodcuts from the work of Juraj Agricola, De re metallica libri XII.
