About the museum
The Národopisné múzeum was established by the District National Committee in Liptovský Hrádok by decision of 15 June 1955 as the Okresné vlastivedné múzeum hornoliptovského ľudu (District Local History Museum of the Upper Liptov People). In 1960 it was renamed Národopisné múzeum Liptova, and its collecting area was extended to the whole of Liptov.
It is housed in the historic building of the former salt office from 1770, in which the officials of the royal salt warehouse worked. Later the prefect of the Likavsko-hrádocké komorské panstvo (Likavka-Hrádok chamber estate) was seated there. Since 2004 the building has provided space for several exhibitions on the culture of Liptov.
Visitors can see the modrotlač exhibition with a reconstruction of the workshop of master Daniel Žiška from Hybe; a gallery of bobbin lace with a lace almost 52 metres long; and an exhibition of the chamber office with furniture, works of art and hunting trophies. In the attic there has been a specialised exhibition on pastoral culture since 2005. The museum is managed by the Liptovské múzeum (Liptov Museum) based in Ružomberok.
