About the museum
Sklabiňa Castle is the largest castle in the Turiec region. It is first mentioned in writing in 1309; later it was the seat of the Turiec ispáns (county administrators), and in 1434 it was burned down by the Hussites. The castle manor was destroyed on 30 September 1944, and after the war part of the buildings was dismantled for building materials.
The museum building dates from the mid-17th century and was the fourth outer bailey. The civic association Donjon has been restoring it since 2000, and since 2006 the private Múzeum hradu Sklabiňa has operated there. In May 2022, after the restoration of the northern bastion, the exhibition Memory 1944 was opened to the public. Since 2020 the castle grounds have been cleared and are accessible all year round for an admission fee, from which the restoration is financed.
