About the museum
The Aviation Museum in Košice is a branch of the Slovak Technical Museum and, since 2002, has been the first aviation museum in Slovakia. On an area of 7,100 m² it presents almost 500 exhibits on the history of aviation, the development of aircraft, aero engines and instrumentation from the beginnings of flight to the recent past. A separate exhibition is also devoted to the history of road transport.
The exhibition on developments up to 1945 contains a collection of piston engines and aircraft models, and – as the only one in Slovakia – a German Messerschmitt Bf-109 G14/AS fighter. Aviation after 1945 is represented by Soviet aircraft: the Ilyushin Il-14 and Il-18, the Yakovlev Yak-40, the Mi-8 helicopter and the fighters Su-25K, Su-22M4, MiG-21 and MiG-29, as well as the Czechoslovak types Aero L-29 Delfín, Let L-200 Morava and the Blaník glider. Visitors can also enter the interior of the government special aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-154M.
The gallery of aircraft – gifts from presidents and governments – was founded by President Rudolf Schuster. It includes, for example, the Mirage III, the Lockheed F-104S Starfighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom, the Saab J-37 Viggen and a European rarity, the Nanchang Q-5 from China. A separate exhibition is devoted to the golden era of Czechoslovak aviation and to the Aero L-29 and L-39 Albatros training aircraft, which have a strong link with Košice.
