Múzeum púchovskej kultúry

About the museum

The amateur excavations of Baron Emil Hoenig O'Carroll at Skala in Púchov made it possible to identify one of the most important cultures of the early historical period on the territory of Slovakia, the Púchov culture. It grew out of the local roots of the original population, with the participation of Celtic and Dacian colonists; the dominant element of society became the Celtic tribe of the Kotins, outstanding metallurgists and smiths.

The most important sites of the Púchov culture include extensive hillforts and oppida, among them Skala in Púchov, Divinka, Vyšný Kubín, Liptovská Mara and Spišský hrad. The decisive component of material culture is ceramics and iron products, to a lesser extent bronze, silver and gold; coins were minted from precious metals.

The exhibition entitled Púchovská kultúra v Župnom dome (The Púchov Culture in the County House) is the result of long-term cooperation between several organisations. Through information panels, photographs and exhibits it presents to visitors the research of Baron Hoenig O'Carroll (1834–1894). It is presented by the Vlastivedné múzeum v Považskej Bystrici (Local History Museum in Považská Bystrica).
