About the museum
Modra became famous as a town of wine and ceramics. After gaining the privileges of a free royal town in 1607, it built town fortifications, which were erected in 1610–1646. The northern bastion of the fortifications was reconstructed by the Západoslovenské múzeum v Trnave (Western Slovak Museum in Trnava), which opened the Galéria Ignáca Bizmayera in it in 1994.
The Múzeum slovenskej keramickej plastiky (Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture) was created within the Slovak-Austrian project TRA-KER, with support from European Union funds, and was opened on 18 May 2012 with an exhibition of ceramics from the Austrian Ethnographic Museum in Vienna. The original dilapidated vineyard house by the walls had to be replaced with an exact replica. The building is connected by a courtyard to the bastion with the gallery.
The permanent exhibition Z dejín modranskej keramiky (From the History of Modra Ceramics), opened on 20 May 2017, captures the potters' and jug-makers' craft, guild life and a rich figural production. The current offer includes the exhibition Figuralisti. Od džbána k figurálnej tvorbe (The Figurative Artists. From the Jug to Figurative Work). Since 26 March 2023 the Múzeum Ľudovíta Štúra (Ľudovít Štúr Museum) has also been temporarily housed in the building.
