About the museum
The Múzeum Ľudovíta Štúra (Ľudovít Štúr Museum) was founded in 1965 on the initiative of the Institute of Slovak Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Modra, where Štúr is buried. The first exhibition, Život a dielo Ľudovíta Štúra (The Life and Work of Ľudovít Štúr), opened on 29 October 1965. Because of a long reconstruction of the former town hall, the first permanent exhibition was only opened in 1978.
The museum has been part of the Slovak National Museum since 2006. In that year it moved into the house on the square that belonged to Štúr's sister-in-law and where Ľudovít Štúr died. In 2015, on the 200th anniversary of Štúr's birth, the exhibition Ľudovít Štúr a moderné Slovensko (Ľudovít Štúr and Modern Slovakia) was opened there.
The museum builds its collections chiefly around the personality of Ľudovít Štúr and the history and folk traditions of Modra. The collection holds over 5,000 objects, especially ceramics, folk textiles, furniture and items from the history of the town. Since 26 March 2023 the museum has been temporarily housed in the building of the Múzeum slovenskej keramickej plastiky (Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture), while the building on Štúrova Street is being revitalised.
