About the museum

The villa of the spouses Ján and Eva Mathé, which includes the studio of the Košice sculptor Ján Mathé, was built in 1975–1983 to a design by the architect Michal Baník in cooperation with the sculptor. The couple moved in in 1983. The building is distinguished by a purist treatment of pure mass and a rational composition based on the golden section; it is an example of modern architecture and in 2019 was declared a national cultural monument.

After the sculptor's wife, Professor Eva Mathéová, donated the villa and studio to the city of Košice (deed of gift of 21 October 2022), a museum was created, whose founding deed was signed on 26 May 2023. The museum is part of the organisational structure of the city of Košice, and its mission is to preserve the architectural heritage and the artistic legacy of Ján Mathé.

The collection fund consists of about 400 sculptural works and 2,950 drawings by Ján Mathé; the monument also includes the furniture and a reference library of more than 1,500 volumes. The collections are made accessible through a permanent exhibition in the studio, whose author is the Czech art historian Jana Horneková.
