About the museum
The profile of the Slovak Technical Museum took shape after the issue of a temporary statute for the then Technical Museum in 1947; the first exhibitions opened a year later, and in 1983 the museum received its present name. It is a specialised museum with nationwide scope which collects, documents and presents technical monuments and collections in the fields of mining, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, energy, electrical engineering, geodesy, physics and many other disciplines.
The seat building stands on Hlavná street in the heritage reserve of Košice, on the site of four 13th-century Gothic burghers' houses, which were rebuilt in the 18th century in the Theresian classicising Baroque style. From 1654 it was the traditional seat of the highest Upper Hungarian military dignitaries, which is why the complex became known as the House of the Upper Hungarian Captaincy or the Rákoczi Palace.
The permanent exhibitions present mining in an artificially created underground by the academic sculptor Arpád Račko, the history of metallurgy, artistic metalwork, geodesy and cartography, electrical engineering, physics and dental technology. The museum also manages other branches, for example the Aviation Museum in Košice, the Transport Museum in Bratislava and the Solivar in Prešov.
