About the museum
The East Slovak Museum in Košice was founded in 1872 as the Upper Hungarian Museum, on the initiative of Imrich Henszlmann, a native of Košice and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. After his death in 1888 the museum received more than 3,000 collection items from his donation.
The present main building, in a representative Neo-Renaissance style, was handed over for use in 1901; it was the first building of its kind built for a museum on the territory of present-day Slovakia. The museum has natural science, history and art history departments, and since 2002 it has been an accredited research institution.
Besides the main building, the museum manages several other sites in Košice's historic centre: the Division Building, the Katová bašta (Executioner's Bastion) complex with Rodošto, the U Božieho oka pharmacy and the Miklušova prison. Its best-known collection is the Košice Golden Treasure, with 2,920 gold coins, displayed in the experience exhibition Cesta za pokladom (The Road to the Treasure).
