About the museum
The castle arose at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries as a guard post on the road to Turiec, where tolls were collected. It gradually grew to 165 × 61 m, and thanks to multiple fortifications with walls, towers, bastions and four gates, it was among the best-fortified castles in the Horné Považie (Upper Považie). The castle rock was settled already in prehistoric times.
Strečno was a royal castle and later the property of the nobility; it passed through the hands of the Pongrácz family, Pavol Kiniži, the Kostka family, the Deršffy family and the Vešeléni family. The best-known owner was František Vešeléni with his wife Žofia Bosniaková, called the Saint of Strečno (Svätica zo Strečna). At the end of the 17th century Emperor Leopold I had the castle demolished and the well and cistern filled in.
The castle has been a national cultural monument since 1970, and since 1995, after long reconstruction works, it has been open to the public as a conserved ruin. It is managed by the Považské múzeum; since June 2026 reconstruction has been taking place here for a new exhibition on the history of the castle.
