About the museum
The Museum of Jewish Culture began to take shape within the Historical Museum of the Slovak National Museum as a department of Jewish culture. It became an independent specialised SNM museum with nationwide scope in 1994. Its mission is to preserve and present Jewish spiritual and material culture in Slovakia and to document the Holocaust.
The museum strives to rescue from destruction, oblivion or export abroad three-dimensional Judaica, documents, paintings and memorial objects. At its opening its own objects made up only a small part of the collection, and most of it was on loan from Jewish religious communities. Today the loans comprise only a few items, and about half of the collection consists of donations.
The permanent exhibition, open since May 1993, is installed in the Zsigray Curia on Židovská street. It presents the history and culture of Jews on the territory of Slovakia, their everyday life, holidays, the interior of a synagogue and prominent personalities. The exhibition concludes with a tribute to around 70,000 Holocaust victims from Slovakia. The Holocaust Museum in Sereď also belongs to the museum.
