About the museum
The Bratislava City Museum was founded in 1868 and is one of the oldest functioning museums in Slovakia. It presents the history of the town, its inhabitants and the events that shaped its face. Its collections comprise more than 120,000 objects and document everyday life, crafts, trade, wine-growing and the cultural life of Bratislava.
The museum is housed in the Old Town Hall, one of the oldest secular buildings in the town. It arose from the gradual joining of several burghers' houses: the oldest part is the house with a tower from the 14th century; in 1422 the Pawer house was added, and in the second half of the 16th century the Unger house with its arcaded corridor. The Gothic tower received its Baroque form in 1733. The monument restoration of the 1960s was completed by a comprehensive reconstruction in 2008–2011.
The Old Town Hall is linked with Apponyi Palace in a single visitor route with a joint ticket. Visitors can see the permanent Exhibition on the History of the Town, the wine-growing exhibition, short-term exhibitions, the town jail and the view from the town hall tower. Other sites also belong to the museum, for example Devín Castle, Antique Gerulata and Michalská veža.
