About the museum

Baza 20 (Base 20), originally called Točka 20 (Point 20), served as the seat of the political leadership of the Slovenian National Liberation Movement from April 1943 to December 1944. Because of exceptional security measures, no enemy ever discovered it. Today it is regarded as the only preserved monument of its kind of a resistance movement in Europe, and it is protected as a monument of national importance.

The complex comprised 26 barracks, in which members of the Izvršni odbor Osvobodilne fronte (Executive Committee of the Liberation Front), the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovenia, newspaper editors and others lived and worked. In barrack no. 16 a permanent exhibition presents the role and significance of the base, while barrack no. 22 shows the diversity of partisan activity on Kočevski Rog, including the hospitals and workshops.

The base, together with the hospitals Jelendol and Zgornji Hrastnik, is run by the Dolenjski muzej Novo mesto (Dolenjska Museum Novo mesto), which takes care of the museum presentation and maintenance. The memorial area is accessible all year round; visitors can explore it on their own or with a museum guide.
