About the museum

The beginnings of the museum go back to 1952, when material collection began within the framework of the Muzejsko društvo Kočevje (Kočevje Museum Society), founded on 3 November 1953. Since 1963 the museum has been housed in the Šeškov dom. It looks after the movable cultural heritage in the municipalities of Kočevje, Kostel, Loški Potok and Osilnica and presents it to the public; a special emphasis is placed on material connected with Slovenian statehood.

The Šeškov dom was built in 1937–1938 as a Sokol hall, to designs by the civil engineer Gustav Trenz of Novo mesto; it was solemnly opened on 22 August 1938. During the Second World War it was badly damaged; after the war it was restored and renamed after the People’s Hero Jože Šešek. From 1 to 3 October 1943 the Assembly of Slovene Deputies sat in its hall, the first directly elected representative body of an occupied nation in Europe during the Second World War. In 2001 it was declared a cultural monument of national importance.

The museum organises exhibitions, educational programmes, workshops and guided tours; it also manages the Likovni salon Kočevje (Art Salon Kočevje) and the exhibitions in the Kulturni dom Predgrad (Predgrad Cultural Centre).
