About the museum
In the Dom čebelarjev (Beekeepers’ House) in Brode near Škofja Loka there is a beekeeping museum collection titled ‘Tle se špeglajte, lenuhi, po tej mali, marni muhi!’ (Look Here, Lazybones, at This Small, Busy Fly!), which is run by the Loški muzej Škofja Loka. It was created in cooperation with the Čebelarsko društvo Škofja Loka (Škofja Loka Beekeepers’ Association), the Društvo Sožitje, the Loški muzej and the Razvojna agencija Sora (Sora Development Agency).
The collection shows the habitat of the Carniolan honeybee and presents in detail the members of the bee colony and bee products, as well as the ways in which bees and people obtain them. It draws attention to the importance of bees for pollinating plants, to their endangerment through pollution and climate change, and to their role in Slovenian cultural heritage. It also stresses that Slovenian beekeepers may keep bees only with the Carniolan bee, the autochthonous bee breed.
