About the museum
The Visoko farmstead is one of the most important rural architectural monuments in Slovenia. Its present form developed gradually, from its first mention in the sources in the 13th century to the latest changes in the 20th century, but it most clearly reflects the power of the wealthiest peasant stratum in the second half of the 18th century. From the mid-17th century to the end of the 19th century the Kalan family ruled at Visoko.
The estate was bought by the writer, politician and Mayor of Ljubljana Dr Ivan Tavčar (1851–1923), who lived at Visoko with his wife Franja (1868–1938) for 45 years. The couple are buried in a family tomb not far from the farmstead. In 2017 most of the settlement was declared a cultural monument of national importance.
The collections in the manor were set up by the Loški muzej (Škofja Loka Museum) together with the Občina Gorenja vas - Poljane (Municipality of Gorenja vas–Poljane) and the Zavod za varstvo kulturne dediščine, območna enota Ljubljana (Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, Ljubljana regional unit). They present the building and historical development of the farmstead, the Kalan family, the Tavčar couple, and a 19th-century kitchen displayed in an atmospheric setting.
