About the museum

The Muzej Železniki (Železniki Museum) is a local museum that collects, preserves, researches and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of the places along the Selška Sora river. It was founded in 1969. It is housed in the Plavčeva hiša, a massive two-storey ironworks building in the old part of Železniki, in the immediate vicinity of the blast furnace, which for centuries belonged to the important ironworking family Plavc.

The house has many vaulted rooms and internal portals, and on the second floor a stucco ceiling has been preserved. A thorough renovation began in 1997 and was completed in 2010. As an architectural monument of the first category, the house serves as a model for the renovation of other important buildings in the town.

The collections tell of the technical and cultural heritage of the Selška valley: of the 600-year tradition of extracting iron ore, of the blast furnace, the only one of its kind preserved in Europe, of blacksmithing, sawmilling, charcoal burning and cooperage, of milling, of bobbin lace since 1881, of firefighting, and of Železniki during the Second World War. Several temporary exhibitions are held in the gallery every year.
