About the museum
Zakojca, the birthplace of the writer France Bevk, lies on the northern slope of the Kojca above the Baška grapa. Bevk was born here on 17 September 1890. In Dolenja vas stands his second home, called pri Volarju (at Volar’s), to which the family moved when France was about three years old. The building was owned by the Bevk family until the mid-1980s; it was then bought and converted into a memorial museum, which was solemnly opened in September 1990 for the centenary of the writer’s birth.
The built stone house leans against the slope and differed from the others in the village by its entrance hall, which was separated from the kitchen by a thin wall, by its chimney, which was rare at the time, and by the steep wooden stairs up to the attic. Grandfather, grandmother, an aunt, the parents and eight children lived there. France Bevk wrote more than one hundred and fifty works, around fifty of them for young readers, and his works have been translated into more than twenty languages.
The farmstead can be visited in the company of a guide from the Cerkljanski muzej (Cerkno Museum), so advance notice is required.
