About the museum
Next to the Church of St Nicholas, in the middle of the old village core of Podbrdo, stands the renovated, venerable Jakovkna hiša (Jakovk House). It houses a tourist information office for the upper part of the Baška grapa (Baška Gorge) and a permanent museum exhibition, set up by the Tolmin Museum in 2008.
The exhibition, in the former living room, chamber and kitchen, presents three turning points in the history of the upper Baška grapa. The largest room shows the Tyrolean colonisation of the area in the 13th century; a smaller chamber holds photographic evidence of the construction of the Bohinj Tunnel and the railway line completed in 1906; and the last room shows the time between the two world wars, when Primorska passed to the Kingdom of Italy and the area became a strictly guarded border zone. Several films about life in the upper Baška grapa are also shown.
