About the museum
The museum was opened in 1979 in Bohinjska Bistrica, in the house of Tomaž Godec (1905–1942). Godec was a tanner, also known as a skier and sports organiser, and the first Bohinj partisan, who took part in the uprising of the Bohinj people against German occupation in 1941.
The museum is a detached unit of the Gorenjski muzej (Upper Carniola Museum). Ownership passed in 1995 from the Municipality of Radovljica to the Municipality of Bohinj, while professional care has always been provided by the Gorenjski muzej. Today, alongside Godec's story, it presents a broader overview of Bohinj's history.
The permanent exhibitions cover three millennia of history: the archaeological periods from the Middle Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, the tanning and shoemaking tradition of Bohinj, selected images of Bohinj from rural life to tourism, and the periods of both world wars. The museum also organises museum evenings and workshops for children and adults.
