About the museum
The Ptuj Dominican monastery was founded in 1230 with the support of the Archbishop of Salzburg, Eberhard II, by Matilda of Ptuj, widow of Frederick III of Ptuj. With donations from wealthy nobles and citizens it developed into an art-historically valuable complex, which is counted among the monuments of European importance. It was built in several medieval construction phases, and at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries it was remodelled in the Baroque style. The cloister, designed in the early 13th century, painted in the first half of the 14th century and vaulted in the first quarter of the 15th century, arouses the greatest admiration.
The monastery was abolished during the Josephine church reforms (1785) and finally dissolved (1786); afterwards it served as a military hospital until 1923. In 1928 it was bought by the municipality, which converted it into a museum and flats. Until 2011 or 2012 the Pokrajinski muzej Ptuj Ormož (Regional Museum Ptuj Ormož), with its archaeological department and collections, and the Zgodovinski arhiv Ptuj (Ptuj Historical Archives) operated in it. Today the monastery is open for visits and at the same time operates as a congress and cultural centre.
