About the museum

The building at Prešernova ulica 37, already visible on the Franciscan cadastre of 1824, began to be converted into a prison in 1842. It served as a prison from 1844 until the 1950s. During the Second World War the German occupiers imprisoned politically conscious Slovenes, activists of the Liberation Front (OF) and their sympathisers here; many were taken to be shot in Maribor and Celje or sent to German concentration camps. In the Ptuj prison the National Hero Jože Lacko died after torture on 18 August 1942; a plaque on the façade commemorates these events.

Until 1968 the building housed flats, after which it was taken over by the Pokrajinski muzej Ptuj. Between 2001 and 2007 the museum refurbished the interior to create restoration workshops, a library, a photographic studio and offices. In the southern wing of the basement, with its former cells, it set up an exhibition on Ptuj and its surroundings in the 20th century.
