About the museum
The gallery bears the name of the great Slovenian artist France Mihelič, who gave Ptuj an extensive graphic collection and his entire legacy of works on paper. From 1936 to 1941 Mihelič taught drawing at the Ptuj grammar school; his central motifs were the picturesque surroundings and the demonic kurent (a carnival figure).
The gallery is housed in an old tower by the Drava, built in 1551, which was once part of the Renaissance defence system of Ptuj. Besides two permanent collections – the Graphic Cabinet of France Mihelič and the Graphic Collection of Luigi Kasimir – it hosts exhibitions and events of contemporary visual art from Slovenia and abroad, with an emphasis on authors from Ptuj. The Kasimir collection is based on donations from the collector Marko Sluga, who gave the museum prints by the artist, a master of colour etching combined with aquatint.
