About the museum
According to experts in the protection of natural and cultural heritage, Dominkova domačija in Gorišnica is the oldest fully preserved house built in the Pannonian style. It is over 300 years old. There is no year carved into the beam; its age is inferred from a sale contract of 1824, found during renovation, in which the serfs Jožef and Marija Golob sold the property to Jurij Kranjc from Gorišnica. Six generations lived in the house; the last resident, Katarina Nemec (1894–1990), known to locals as “Dominkova Kata”, died there in 1990.
The house is built in an L-shaped corner arrangement, so that the living and farm sections meet. The building is of log construction (cimprana), covered with clay plaster and whitewashed with lime; the roof is thatched with straw. Eleven rooms retain their original furnishings: the black kitchen, the parlour (izba), the pantry, as well as a barn, stable, litter shed and winter cellar. The pride of the house is the bread oven with a colourful floral pattern.
The surroundings include pig sties, beehives, maize cribs, a Pannonian well, grape arbours, a herb garden and a small field. The Domačija is not just a museum, but a living past.
