About the museum

The castle, standing not far from the parish church, is an old commandery of the Knights of the Cross, first mentioned in 1273. Its design probably dates from shortly after 1200, when Friderik of Ptuj, a ministerial of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, handed the Velika Nedelja territory over to the German Order of Knights. The medieval core is preserved in the south-western part of the building; today the Renaissance design predominates. Later alterations, especially between 1723 and 1730, did not change the exterior significantly.

In the courtyard there is a Baroque well with a wrought-iron crown and a drive mechanism, and built into the wall of the inner courtyard is a heraldic relief of the commander Marquard von Eckh from 1612. The castle chapel once housed Gothic sculptures of St Catherine, St Barbara and Our Lady of Compassion from the first quarter of the 15th century; today they are part of the collection at Ptuj Castle.

In the former commandery there is now an ethnological collection and the exhibition Velika Nedelja through the Centuries. The castle is one of the units of the Pokrajinski muzej Ptuj Ormož (Regional Museum Ptuj–Ormož).
