About the museum
Štatenberg Manor (Dvorec Štatenberg) is a Baroque building near Makole on the edge of the Haloze hills above the River Dravinja; it takes its name from the original castle Štatenberg, which already stood in the 13th century at the place called Stari Grad. It is best known for the story of the Hungarian magnate Baron Franc Tahy, the main instigator of the great Slovene-Croatian peasant revolt of 1573. In the late 17th century the owners of the estate, the Counts Attems, decided to leave the medieval castle above Makole and move to the valley.
The Baroque manor was most probably commissioned already in 1690 by Count Ignac Marija Attems as a summer residence, and it is said to have been completed between 1720 and 1740. It was designed by the Graz architect Johann Joachim Carlon, who also built the Attems Palace in Graz. The manor is symmetrical, and a small Baroque garden was laid out in it, later remodelled as an English landscape park; part of the design has been preserved to this day. In 1910 part of the manor with the chapel burned down; the chapel was partly restored in 2017. In the 1980s the manor was renovated.
It is best known for the frescoes and stuccoes in the large state hall and in the elegant salons beside it. The allegories on the ceiling of the state hall depict science and art under the protection of peace, and the four elements. Today the manor belongs to the company Impol from Slovenska Bistrica; guided tours of the museum part are run by the Fundacija za ohranitev dvorca Štatenberg (Štatenberg Manor Preservation Foundation).
