About the museum
The Ljutomer museum operates as an organisational unit of the Splošna knjižnica Ljutomer (Ljutomer Public Library). It comprises three permanent collections, which visitors see when touring the premises on Glavni trg.
The general museum collection shows the economic, cultural, political and social life of the town and its surroundings, from the first mention of Ljutomer as a market in the 13th century to the mid-20th century. It presents notable personalities who became known far beyond Prlekija. It also deals with witch trials, epidemics and raids by Hungarians, Ottomans and Kuruc rebels, as well as the ethnological and culinary characteristics of the town. The collection of photographs and films by Dr Karol Grossmann shows artistic photographs and the first Slovene films from 1905–1906, filmed in Ljutomer, among them “Odhod od maše” (Leaving Mass). A statue of film director Fritz Lang, who stayed with Grossmann in 1915, can also be seen.
The third collection is dedicated to the tabor movement: the first Slovene tabor in Ljutomer in 1868 began a series of eighteen tabors, at which Slovenes demanded a united Slovenia and Slovene as the language of schools, offices and worship.
