About the museum
The first horse races in Slovenia took place around Ljutomer as early as 1874, and in 1875 a racing society was founded in Ljutomer, today’s Kasaški klub Ljutomer, one of the oldest in Europe. The Ljutomer trotter (ljutomerski kasač) is a noble horse of oriental origin that has been bred in Prlekija for centuries; it is fast, sturdy, hard-working and frugal in its feed.
The museum opened in 2012 as part of the Kasaški klub Ljutomer, beside the stables and racetrack. The permanent exhibition was prepared in cooperation with the Pokrajinski muzej Ptuj Ormož (Ptuj Ormož Regional Museum) and the Zgodovinski arhiv Ptuj (Ptuj Historical Archives). The collection was created from donations by 43 local horse breeders and includes, among other things, a hand-made racing cart from 1899, cups and awards, and documentary material selected from more than 3,000 photographs and 140 museum objects.
The museum presents horseshoeing, the development of the society, breeding and the club’s activities. For younger visitors a short film about the playful foal Jona has been prepared. Each summer the club organises eight races, which are the highlight of Sunday afternoons.
