About the museum
The Skomarska hiša from 1803 is among the most important cultural monuments in the area of the southern Pohorje and the Dravinja valley. It stands in the centre of Skomarje, one of the highest-lying compact villages in Slovenia, at an altitude of about 944 metres, where most of the population still lives from farming. It is designed as a transitional type between the late-medieval chimney house (dimnica) and a more advanced house with a black kitchen.
The chimney building tradition is best preserved in the large kitchen with a hearth and a large chimney stove that extends into a bread oven. The building originally comprised a spacious hall (veža), a kitchen, the house (living room), the štibelc (bedroom) and the press room (prešnica) with a wooden fruit press. With the renovation the purpose of some rooms was partly changed, as an exclusively museum presentation of the house was not possible.
Since 1996 the house has been converted into a museum, in which the interior rooms with the black kitchen and objects of ethnographic significance are preserved. Cultural events are held in it from time to time, including the monthly meeting of writers and other creators “Jest'mam en star znucan koš”, organised by KUD Vladko Mohorič from Zreče.
