About the museum
The house, known locally as “Pr' Menačn'k”, was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as the home and tailoring workshop of the Ahčin family. It is unusual for the Domžale area: it is a corner-house type, where living quarters and farm buildings lie under one roof, while the surroundings are dominated by the Gorenjska hiša (Upper Carniolan house). The homestead is an important site of Domžale's cultural heritage, which rests on craft traditions.
Since 2003 the homestead has been renovated and reorganised. The living section houses an ethnographic collection of old objects and furniture showing the life of the former farming and craft family. The farm section contains exhibition rooms for art and museum exhibitions; in the attic there is a permanent display of works by sculptor France Ahčin (1919–1989), who was born in this house; outside is a herb garden.
After his schooling in Ljubljana and diploma in Florence, France Ahčin worked in Rome, then left for Argentina, where he furnished several churches and founded an artistic ceramics factory. Among other things he created the artistic design for the Slovenian translation of the epic Martín Fierro, with 16 reliefs; the collection is displayed at Menačenkova domačija and at the Kulturni dom Franca Bernika Domžale. The homestead is run by the Kulturni dom Franca Bernika Domžale, which hosts exhibitions, workshops and events here.
