About the museum
The Sadnikar collection is the oldest, richest and most important private museum collection in Slovenia. It was founded by the Kamnik veterinarian Dr Josip Nikolaj Sadnikar (1863–1952), an enthusiastic collector of antiques and patron, who opened it to the public in 1893. In 1937 the town of Kamnik made Sadnikar an honorary citizen.
Over almost sixty years of collecting he gathered several thousand objects of great historical and cultural value; a significant share was contributed by porcelain and crystal, which his wife also collected. He displayed the collection in the house at Šutna where he lived with his family. In 1964 the Municipality of Kamnik bought part of the collection for the newly founded Kamnik museum, while the remainder stayed in family ownership and is still accessible to the public.
The classicist house from the early 19th century and the collection are both declared cultural monuments. In the rooms, alongside antique furniture, are displayed sacred art, paintings by Slovenian artists from the late 19th century, antique porcelain and glass, medieval weapons, the skeleton of a cave bear, carpets, and Chinese and Japanese art. The collection is today carefully preserved by the Sadnikar family.
