About the museum

The Budnar house in Zgornje Palovče above Kamnik is one of the oldest farmsteads in the village. According to tradition, the building was erected in the middle of the 17th century as a three-part house of a medium-sized farmer. In 2002 the municipality declared it a cultural monument of local importance. It is named after its last owner, Cveto Budnar, and is owned by the Municipality of Kamnik.

The house has been renovated and operates as a living museum house that preserves the tradition of old farmhouses and simple rural life. A fire is still lit in the black kitchen with its open hearth. In the house (living room) stand a maple table with a corner for the household altar, a wooden bench around the table, a traditional bed and a special table for kneading dough.

In the former cowshed and cellar, exhibitions are held from time to time; in the house, workshops and lectures are held on old customs, the preservation of farm work and traditional dishes.
