About the museum
The Medobčinski muzej Kamnik has administrative, exhibition and storage rooms in Zaprice Castle on a small hill above Kamnik. A castle tower already stood on this site in the 14th century, mentioned as a court (dvor). Around 1550 Count Jurij Lamberg built a new manor here; the castle took on its present late-Baroque appearance in the third quarter of the 18th century, when Anton Medard Wiederkehr enlarged and baroquised it. It received its final form in the 19th century with the construction of the north-eastern wing.
The last private owners were the Barons Schneid-Rechbach, who spent their summers at the castle. After the Second World War the inventory was scattered, while the castle salon on the second floor was restored. Today the castle houses the museum, which is complemented by the units Rojstna hiša Rudolfa Maistra, Galerija Miha Maleš and Galerija Pogled.
The permanent exhibitions in the castle present the living space of the Kamnik area, from palaeontological finds, among them a mammoth skeleton, through the first settlements and the emergence of the town in the 13th century, up to the 19th century; life on the Kamnik mountain pastures and the history of the castle. Part of the display is the Lapidarij Zgodbe v kamnu.
