About the museum
The Slamnikarski muzej Domžale (Straw Hat Museum Domžale) fulfils its mission with a permanent exhibition of an extensive collection of straw hats, the materials and equipment for making them, and rich documentation with photographs and biographical testimonies. It keeps and expands the collection through new research and spreads knowledge of straw hat making. The museum has also become a meeting place for people who value this heritage, and it strengthens local and national identity.
The permanent exhibition on the first floor takes visitors through the history of straw plaiting and straw hat sewing in Europe, especially in Domžale and its surroundings. Visitors learn the processes of plaiting straw braids and making hats, and the tools and devices used for this. On display is a rich collection of straw hats showing different types, colours, materials and patterns of plaited braids; some models can also be tried on.
On the ground floor there are a room for temporary exhibitions and events and the museum shop. For groups booked in advance, a demonstration of straw hat sewing and braid plaiting can be arranged for an extra fee, and for kindergartens and schools there are thematic guided tours with creative workshops. Every year in June the Slamnikarski sejem (Straw Hat Fair) takes place, and during the year there are talks, concerts and meetings under the title Srečanja pod slamniki (Meetings under Straw Hats). The museum is run by the Kulturni dom Franca Bernika Domžale (Franc Bernik Cultural Centre Domžale).
