About the museum
Morostig is a visitor point of the municipality of Ig, which opens the doors to the exploration of the Ljubljansko barje and the pile dwellings. It consists of three units: the Hiša Morostig with an exhibition in the centre of Ig, a themed trail across the marsh, and a reconstructed pile-dwelling settlement about two kilometres from the house.
Nine thematic units of the exhibition in the house present important findings from research into the Ljubljansko barje and the pile dwellings. Visitors learn about the pile-dwelling period and the settlements around the Alps, which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and about the biodiversity of the marshland landscape, which is part of the Natura 2000 network and a landscape park. The achievements of Karel Dežman are presented in particular: he was the first to survey the marsh vegetation comprehensively, explored the remains of pile-dwelling settlements near Ig and organised the first official archaeological excavations in Carniola there.
In the pile-dwelling settlement there is a reconstruction of five huts and one drevak, which tells the story of life in the pile dwellings: metalworkers, weavers and potters. A visit to the pile dwelling is possible according to the published timetable with a guide; it is recommended to visit the exhibition in the house first and then follow the themed trail to the pile dwelling.
