About the museum
The architect Jože Plečnik (1872–1957) lived and worked in the Plečnik House in Trnovo from 1921 until his death. Here his vision of Ljubljana as a capital modelled on ancient cities took shape. Plečnik left his mark on three European capitals: Vienna, Prague and, above all, his native Ljubljana.
The house consists of two old houses on Karunova ulica, which Plečnik joined with a cylindrical extension and a winter garden. The winter garden adjoins a spacious garden behind the house. The residence has been preserved with the original furnishings and objects as the architect left them, and it is one of the few artists' homes in the world that have been preserved so well.
After its renovation in 2013–2015 the house was fully open to the public for the first time. Today it is run by the Muzej in galerije mesta Ljubljane. Besides the residence, visitors can see the permanent exhibition Plečnik with models, plans, a model of Plečnik's Ljubljana and the architect's personal objects, temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists, the museum shop and a study centre.
