About the museum

The anti-Turkish refuge (tabor) above Cerovo was built at the end of the 15th century and is today a local cultural monument. In size it counts among the smaller refuges. The complex consists of a wall with defensive towers and a small church dedicated to St Nicholas, which forms the heart of the defensive complex. The church was built around the 13th century, on the site of earlier settlement from prehistory and a later Roman fortification.

In times of increased danger of raids from the Ottoman Empire, the ordinary population built a wall around the church, greatly improving their chances of survival in an attack. The refuge also served for storing food and property. The wall is about 9 metres high and 70 cm wide; it consists of three defensive towers with loopholes, and a reconstructed wooden walkway runs inside. Access was once possible only via a wooden bridge and strongly fortified gates.

The church of St Nicholas is first mentioned in written sources in 1526, and its Romanesque design shows that it was built as early as the 13th century. It took its present form in 1702. The interior is decorated with frescoes from the early 16th century by the workshop of Tomaž from Senj. The refuge is one of the rare examples where the wall with towers is not in ruins but has survived in practically its original form.
