About the museum
The Južna železnica (Southern Railway) reached Šentjur in 1846 and had a significant influence on the development of the town. The trial run of the first train on the new section between Graz and Celje took place on 27 April 1846; the chief engineer of the line, Carl Ghega, took part. The museum beside the railway station, with its reconstructions, shows the period in which this link was built.
The founder of the museum is Mihael Bučar, a retired long-standing head of the Šentjur railway station and honorary citizen of the Municipality of Šentjur. He has collected almost 4,000 authentic exhibits, which he presents to visitors through stories, original objects and photographs.
The complex consists of a switch and block signal box, signalling and track equipment, steam locomotive series 62 with a water tower and engine shed, and the restored building with the traffic and telegraph office, a photographic room, rooms of the transport and handling service and the office of the museum head. Below the museum is the Vinogradnikova učna klet (Vinogradnik training cellar), where wines from local winegrowers can be tasted.
