About the museum
The house in Šentjur, built in 1760, is the birthplace of the Ipavec dynasty of composers, physicians and patriots. The family moved to Šentjur in 1805, when Franc Ipavec came there. His descendants Benjamin, Gustav and Josip Ipavec left a significant mark on Slovenian music of the 19th and early 20th centuries: Gustav is known for his patriotic songs, Benjamin wrote the first Slovenian opera, Teharski plemiči (The Lords of Teharje), and Josip wrote the first Slovenian ballet, the pantomime Možiček.
Today the house is a museum and at the same time the official venue of the Šentjur municipality. The interior is furnished in the spirit of the 19th century. The exhibition Ipavci. Skladatelji in zdravniki v Šentjurju (The Ipavec Family. Composers and Physicians in Šentjur) was created for the 110th anniversary of the deaths of Benjamin and Gustav Ipavec; it is interactive, equipped with modern technology and offers the option of a virtual tour.
The house also contains a wedding hall and a wine-tasting room. In the garden, under an old linden tree, stand a Plečnik fountain, a stone table and a modern wedding pavilion. Opposite the house stands the birthplace of Josip Ipavec, built by his father Gustav. With the support of the Ministry of Culture, the municipality of Šentjur has planned the renovation of the house for 2026 and 2027.
