About the museum

On the slope of Svinjak hill, which gives the Bovec basin its recognisable appearance, the Austro-Hungarian army built a 200 m long trench in 1914, with two artillery positions, a kitchen, living quarters, an observation post, a shelter and firing loopholes. The fortification, now set up as an open-air museum, played an important role just before the last, 12th Battle of the Isonzo, when a strong artillery attack on the Italian positions between Bovec and Čezsoča was carried out from Čelo.

The museum is an important monument of the Isonzo Front and part of the Peace Trail from the Alps to the Adriatic, with a view over the Bovec basin. It is open all year round, and admission is free.
