About the museum
The oldest vine in the world, the Modra kavčina, was planted in the second half of the 16th century. The first known depiction of the vine dates from 1657, and in 2004 it was entered in the Guinness Book of Records. Today it is regarded as an invaluable natural treasure of Slovenia.
Viticulture has been present in the Maribor area since at least the 11th century; a cellar master of the provincial ruler is mentioned in the town as early as 1353, and in 1876 Maribor hosted the first international viticultural congress in Austria-Hungary.
The museum, run by the Pokrajinski muzej Maribor, tells the story of the vine’s resilience, its guardians, their knowledge and heritage. The visit includes a short animated film on the history of Maribor and a collection which contains rare printed depictions of local grape varieties by the Kreuzer brothers. Visitors receive a small glass of local wine or juice from the Styrian wine-growing areas.
