About the museum
The Umetnostna galerija Maribor opened its doors on 8 February 1954, thus giving Maribor its first professional institution for museum and gallery activity in the field of modern art. It built on the tradition of the Grohar art club, which had played a pioneering role in organised artistic life in the city in the twenties of the 20th century. In the building on the corner of Strossmayerjeva and Orožnova ulica the gallery acquired about 800 m² of exhibition space, which ends with the representative Velika (Great) and Stebrišča (Columned) halls. The central exhibition rooms are in a former bourgeois palace from the first half of the 19th century and a former church of the Celestine monastery from the second half of the 18th century.
After the merger with the Razstavni salon Rotovž in the 1980s, the gallery acquired a curatorship for contemporary art and additional space for presenting contemporary art in the city centre. Today it operates as a regional museum of contemporary visual art.
The collection comprises more than 10,000 works by Slovenian authors from the late 19th century to the present: painting, sculpture, graphics and drawing, photography, video art, multimedia installations and interactive projects. Every year the gallery prepares around 12 exhibitions, from retrospectives of Slovenian authors to international festivals of contemporary art and architectural and design exhibitions.
