About the museum
The Muzej narodne osvoboditve Maribor (Museum of National Liberation Maribor) began operating as an independent institution on 1 May 1958; it was founded by the Maribor District People’s Committee. Its beginnings go back to 1947, when a collection on the National Liberation Struggle was opened in the Pokrajinski muzej Maribor (Regional Museum Maribor), the first such collection in a complex museum in Slovenia. In content it is a historical museum dealing with the recent history of north-eastern Slovenia.
The museum is housed in a middle-class villa at the corner of Mladinska ulica and Ulica heroja Tomšiča, which the Maribor entrepreneur Avgust Scherbaum had built in the mid-1890s. His father, Karl Scherbaum, was the first in Slovenia to light 36 electric bulbs in his mill, in 1883.
The permanent exhibition traces the history of Maribor in the 20th century: industrial Maribor, the struggles for the northern border, the flourishing of Slovenian Maribor between the world wars and the fate of its citizens during the Second World War. The museum was the first in Slovenia to introduce the post of pedagogical curator. The museum also includes the Fotografski muzej Maribor (Photography Museum Maribor), with a collection of more than 1,100 cameras, and Trafika – muzej za enega.
