About the museum

The Maribor synagogue is one of the most important monuments of Jewish cultural heritage on Slovene soil and one of the oldest preserved synagogues in Central Europe. In the 1980s a comprehensive renovation of Maribor’s old town centre took place, which also envisaged the renovation of the former Jewish quarter and the synagogue. For more than 500 years the building was not used as a synagogue, and owing to numerous rebuildings its original testimony had been considerably altered.

Renovation work began in 1992; the first interventions and building investigations already revealed original architectural elements, on the basis of which the central space of the medieval synagogue was reconstructed. The renovation was financed entirely by the Mestna občina Maribor (City of Maribor) and the former Ministry of Culture. As a cultural centre, the synagogue opened its doors to the public in April 2001 under the auspices of the Pokrajinski muzej Maribor (Maribor Regional Museum); since 2011 it has operated as an independent public institute, the Center judovske kulturne dediščine Sinagoga Maribor (Centre of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor).

In line with the renovation project, the synagogue was not restored as a sacral building and is not used as one. It is intended for the study, preservation and presentation of Jewish cultural heritage, and it is a space for intercultural and interreligious dialogue. Since 2010 the centre has been the national coordinator of the project European Days of Jewish Culture.
