About the museum

On 21 January 1955 the District People’s Committee in Murska Sobota established the Pokrajinski muzej za Pomurje (Regional Museum for Pomurje) by decision. Its foundation was the material collected from 1935 onwards by the Prekmursko muzejsko društvo (Prekmurje Museum Society). The museum began operating in 1956, when it was first assigned three rooms with a Baroque salon in the castle in Murska Sobota, and gradually more and more rooms.

The Renaissance castle in the town park gradually became the centre of the cultural and historical memory of the region, and the museum its guardian and narrator. With the growth of the collections, the permanent exhibition, storerooms, workshops and administrative rooms expanded. From the 1990s numerous thematic exhibitions appeared, along with the Zbornik soboškega muzeja (Journal of the Murska Sobota Museum), new archaeological research and the largest specialist library in the region.

Today the Pomurski muzej is the central regional institution for the protection of movable and intangible cultural heritage in Pomurje. The permanent exhibition People on the Mura shows the life of the inhabitants along the River Mura from prehistory to the present day; its renovated part was opened in 2023. In addition, the Kološev kabinet umetniške fotografije (Kološ Cabinet of Art Photography) can be visited by prior arrangement.
