About the museum
The Lončarska vas Filovci institute and museum was founded in 2005. The initiator and creative head, Alojz Bojnec, set up the Zavod Lončarska vas Filovci, which runs the museum and passes the tradition on to visitors. The open-air museum covers around 1,000 m² in the central part of the village. The work began with the restoration of a purchased plot near the Bojnec pottery workshop, and the most endangered examples of Pannonian construction were saved. In 2008 Bojnec received the Murko Charter of the Slovenian Ethnological Society for the original presentation and preservation of the pottery craft.
Filovci is known for its pottery tradition: half a century ago more than 80 potters worked in the village, many of them with dome kilns for firing. Black pottery, fired using the reduction process, is particularly famous. The craft survived into the second half of the 20th century and then gradually died out.
The centre of the museum consists of two cimprače, cultural monuments that bear witness to the former Pannonian building tradition of wood, clay and straw. The House of Pottery contains a permanent exhibition on the Filovci master potters of the 20th century, while the House of Ceramics shows Slovenian industrial ceramics of the 19th to 21st centuries and a black kitchen. The Bojnec pottery workshop is still operating within the museum.
